Journal Citation Reports: RSBMTs impact factor rises to 2.141

On June 28, the 2022 update of the annual Journal Citation Reports (JCR)™ was published. This years launch is based on 2021 data compiled from the Web of Science Core Collection™, the leading collection of quality conference journals, books and annals in the worlds largest global database of neutral citations for publishers. Once again, the Journal of the Brazilian Society of Tropical Medicine (RSBMT) has maintained the growth trajectory it has followed in recent years, which is reflected in its new impact factor (IF) of 2.141. The IF is a measure of the frequency with which the average article of a journal was cited in a given year. It is used to measure the visibility or classification of a journal by calculating the times its articles are cited. In the national ranking, in the area of Tropical Medicine, RSBMT ranks fourth, among those with 100% open access. The editor of RSBMT, Dr. Dalmo Correia, recalls that RSBMTs IF has maintained an upward trajectory in recent years, when it went from 1.358 (2017) to 1.498 (2018), from 1.339 (2019) to 1.581 (2020), until we now reach, in 2021, 2.141. “It is a performance that fills us with pride and enthusiasm and should be attributed to all editors, reviewers, editorial board members, authors and readers,” he points out.

RSBMT has a demanding editorial board and has the advantage of being a non-profit scientific society journal (SBMT). This is the same case as the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (one of the journals with the greatest impact in the field of Tropical Medicine) and the American Journal of Clinical Microbiology, whose society has thousands of partners, large distribution and high citation and impact rates. For Dr. Correia, RSBMT is on the right track, with editors and editorial staff involved and with the adoption of good practices in research and towards the adoption of “open science” and quality measures.

The annual launch of JCR allows the research community to evaluate the worlds high-quality academic journals using a variety of indicators, descriptive data, and visualizations. Reports are used extensively by academic editors around the world to understand the academic impact of their journals on their field and promote them to the research community. Currently, 21,430 journal titles from 240 countries are indexed. In this edition, 192 titles were incorporated into the Web of Science Collection. Each journal met strict quality standards. Twenty-eight evaluation criteria of the journal were applied. The quality control of journals that show evidence of excessive self-citation or stacking of citations is removed. Publications are evaluated by a global team of Clarivate™ internal editors using rigorous selection criteria. The selected content data is carefully selected to ensure accuracy in JCR metrics along with a broad body of descriptive data.

Important facts from 2021 data:

• The Journal Citation Reports contains more than 21,000 journals, from 254 research categories and 114 countries. This includes:
• 12,800 scientific journals;
• 6,600 social science journals;
• 3,000 journals of arts and humanities;
• Almost 13,000 journals have at least one gold open access publication;
• More than 5,300 journals publish all their content in open access;
• 192 journals received a Journal Impact Factor for the first time.
