Notice mistakenly broadcasted by large national and international communication vehicles such as: The Guardian, The Sun, BBC website, O Globo, Agência Brasil, Portal Uai, Veja website, among others, said Brittish TV hostess Charlie Webster had contracted a rare type of malaria in early August during a bycicle trip, in Brazil, departing from Recife.

The fact called attention of specialists at the Brazilian Society of Tropical Medicine (BSTM) precisely by the fact malaria does not exist in the path from Recife to Rio de Janeiro. The BSTM decided to investigate the information.

An e-mail from the Health Ministry this Tueseday afternoon (09/06) said the case was not malaria. The hypothesis was ruled out by PCR and diagnostic slides from Fiocruz/RJ, reference laboratory for malaria outside the Amazon Region.

Still according to the Board, the case was confirmed as being hemolitic-uremic syndrome (HUS) by Shiga toxin producing bacteria.

The Brittish journalist was discharged and returned to her country of origin. The Health Ministry stressed the case was closed for surveillance as HUS.
