Nominations will be evaluated from August 7 to 13. On August 14, the BSTM will disclose the winner, who will be granted with a medal during the Congress opening ceremony

Once again, scientists who made great contributions to Tropical Medicine will be honored in the Congress of the Brazilian Society of Tropical Medicine (MedTrop 2017). During the event, to be held from August 27 to 30 in Cuiaba (MT), the Medalha do Mérito Científico Carlos Chagas (Carlos Chagas Scientific Merit Medal) will be granted.

The winner will be chosen by a judging commission. The group is composed by doctors Mitermayer Galvão dos Reis, Sinval Pinto Brandão Filho (coordinator) and Wilson Alecrim.

The selection criteria remain the same as the previous edition: 1) Exceptional scientific production within the Tropical Medicine field; 2) Have developed significant scientific contribution while working in Brazil; 3) have performed an important role forming human resources in Tropical Medicine (stricto sensu and lato sensu); 4) have developed works which resulted in benefits for the academic community and general population; 5) be over 70 years-old; 6) not be a member of the BSTM board; 7) not have been awarded in previous editions and 8) the nomination of the awarded is restricted to members even with the BSTM financial responsibilities. It is important to notice the winners election does not depend on the number of nominations.

The commission will evaluate the nominations from August 7 to 13. On the 14th of the same month, the BSTM will disclose the winner, who will be granted with the medal during the Congress opening ceremony (27).

Previous winners

The two previous winners of the Senior Researcher Award were José Rodrigues Coura, in 2015 and Zilton de Araújo Andrade, in 2014. In 2016, the Carlos Chagas Scientific Merit Medal was granted to two renowned scientists. Professor João Carlos Pinto Dias was remembered for his scientific contribution to natural history knowledge on Chagas Disease, besides expressively contributing to Chagas Disease control in the endemic region of Bambuí (MG) and studies approaching the evolution of clinical forms after specific treatment. The commission also granted the medal to Professor Vicente Amato Neto, for his contributions to Tropical Medicine, with 68 years of researches, education and extension in Tropical Medicine, resulting in a successful scientific contribution, professional training for national leaders in the field and constitution of several specialized services in several institutions in São Paulo State (USP, Hosp. of the State Server and UNICAMP). He was responsible for characterizing the acute form and transfusion transmission of Chagas Disease; acquired Toxoplasmosis; Diagnostic/treatment of enteroparasitosis; immunizations.…
