More than 110 stories are running for the 2017 Tropical Journalist Award

The 2014 edition had 48 registered reports. In 2015, there were 112 and, in 2016, 253

The fourth edition of the Tropical Journalist Award by the Brazilian Society of Tropical Medicine received 113 stories running for the prize, from which 21 in the TV category, 54 in the printed media category and 38 in the recently added On-line category.

A judging commission composed by BSTM members and a communications professional will analyze the candidate reports. Besides the sum of R$ 1,500 in cash for the winners of the TV, printed media and on-line categories, the winners will be invited to join the 53rd Congress in order to receive the 2017 Tropical Journalist Award. The event will happen in Cuiaba, from August 27 to 30.

2014 Edition

The first edition of the Tropical Journalist Award had 48 registered reports, from which 20 in the TV category and 28 in the printed media category. The winner of the Printed Press Media, the series of reports Neglected diseases in Pará, by news reporter Ismael Machado, from the Diário do Pará newspaper. The winner in the TV category was the special report Leprosy, the story Brazil doesnt know, by reporter Manuella Castro, from TV Brasil. The awarding took place during the 50th MedTrop opening ceremony, in Rio Branco, from August 26 to 30, 2014.

2015 Edition

The second edition of the Tropical Journalist Award by the Brazilian Society of Tropical Medicine received 112 reports to run for the prize, from which 60 in the TV category and 52 in the printed media category. The BSTMs judging commission, after carefully examining all reports, chose as the winner in the Printed Media category the special article about tropical diseases and biotechnology, a series of four complementary reports about tropical diseases, by Vilhena Soares, from the Correio Braziliense newspaper, circulated from January 4 to 7. The winner in the TV category was a series of 43 reports, by Mauricio Rebellato, from RBS TV Santa Rosa, Globo affiliate in Rio Grande do Sul, aired from March 17 to April 22. The awarding took place during the 51st MedTrop opening ceremony, in Fortaleza, from June 14 to 17, 2015.

2016 Edition

The third edition received 253 reports: 94 in the TV category and 159 in the printed media category. The Printed Media category was unanimously won by the article Heirs of Zika – Microscopic threat, by reporters Mônica Tarantino and Monique Oliveira, published on Brasileiros Magazine, this March. The TV category was won, also unanimously, by the series Zika, where everything started, by Susana Santana, aired by TV Bahia, from April 25 to 30, 2016. The awarding took place during the 52nd MedTrop opening ceremony, in Maceió, from August 21 to 24, 2016.
