Carlos Chagas Scientific Merit Medal: Indications can be made as of June 16

Nominations of senior researchers to receive the award can be made between June 16 and 30.

The indications will be evaluated between July 1 and 7th. On July 8, the SBMT will announce the winner, who will be awarded the Carlos Chagas Scientific Merit Medal

For the sixth consecutive year, the Brazilian Society of Tropical Medicine (BSTM) will honor a scientist who played a prominent role in Tropical Medicine. The award will be held at the opening ceremony of the 2019 Medtrop-Parasito, on July 28, in Belo Horizonte (MG).

The judging committee that will choose the winning scientist is composed by Dr. Aluísio Segurado, Glória Teixeira and Mitermayer Galvão dos Reis, the coordinator of the group.

The selection criteria remain the same as those defined in previous editions: 1) Exceptional scientific production in the area of Tropical Medicine; 2) Having developed a significant scientific contribution while working in Brazil; 3) Having played an important role in the training of human resources in Tropical Medicine (stricto sensu e lato sensu); 4) Having developed works that resulted in the benefit of the academic community and the general population; 5) Being over 70 years of age; 6) Not being part of the BSTMs board of directors; 7) Not having won the prize in previous editions. It is important to remember that the nomination of the winners is restricted to those associated to the SBMT and that the election of the winner does not depend on the number of nominations.

The judging commission will evaluate the indications between the 1st and 07th of July. On the 8th of that month, the SBMT will announce the winner, who will be awarded the Medal of Scientific Merit Carlos Chagas at the opening ceremony of the 2019 Medtrop-Parasito.

Previous winners

The winners of the Senior Researcher Award in 2014 and 2015 were respectively Professors Zilton de Araújo Andrade and José Rodrigues Coura. In 2016, the Carlos Chagas Scientific Merit Medal was exceptionally awarded to two renowned scientists: Professors João Carlos Pinto Dias and Vicente Amato Neto. Already in 2017, the awardee was Professor Emeritus of the University of Brasília (UnB), Pedro Luiz Tauil. In 2018, it was awarded to Professor Jeffrey Jon Shaw.
