Medtrop-Parasito 2019 will be a historical event, representing a qualified and expanded space for union and interaction between researchers, managers, teachers, health professionals and undergraduate and postgraduate students, from Brazil and the world

The year of 2019 has very special contexts and to follow this trend, the simultaneous holding of the 55th Congress of the Brazilian Society of Tropical Medicine (MedTrop), XXVI Brazilian Congress of Parasitology, the 34th Meeting of Applied Research in Chagas Disease and the 22nd Meeting of Applied Research in Leishmaniasis (ChagasLeish2019), will result in a historical event, representing a qualified and expanded space of union and interaction between researchers, managers, teachers, health professionals and undergraduate and graduate students from Brazil and the world. The Brazilian Social Forum for Confronting Infectious and Neglected Diseases will also be held this year in its fourth edition. Throughout its three editions, this Forum has become a contribution for the BSTMs for an unrestricted opening of democratic spaces for strengthening social participation based on the voices of social movements of people living with these diseases.

For the Presidents of the 55th MedTrop, Dr. Rosália Morais Torres and Dr. Walderez Ornelas Dutra, Minas Gerais will have a great responsibility to conduct these traditional events in complex scenarios. The joint accomplishment of these three events creates a unique opportunity to bring together researchers from related and complementary areas, strengthening Brazilian science and favoring the discovery of sustainable solutions for tropical diseases, says Dr. Rosalia. Dr. Waldrade Dutra explains that the theme of the 2019 Medtrop-Parasito, Convergence and inclusion: in search of sustainable solutions for the diagnosis, treatment and control of tropical diseases was intended to open perspectives for the integration of science, education and technology, seeking in interdisciplinarity, health benefits, to the development of the individual and the society. According to her, the idea is to create an opportunity for the scientific community to present researches and studies that contribute to overcome the various challenges we face within tropical diseases, such as arboviral diseases and other endemic diseases transmitted by vectors, the various parasitic diseases, the diseases of neglected populations, hepatitis, tuberculosis, among others. Highlighted themes include translational research, new methodologies for education and the use of technologies for the well-being of the individual and health promotion.

For the president of SBMT, Dr. Sinval Pinto Brandão Filho, this years edition has special characteristics if compared to the classic profile of the MEDTROP congresses, because the joint organizing committee has given the bi-annual congress of the Brazilian Society of Parasitology a special effort to reconcile the traditional common themes to the two associations in the same event, in a context of great difficulties for the accomplishment of events. In this context, the organizing committee has been totally dedicated to making the agenda of the two entities as complete as possible and we hope that we will have a unique and special edition that will meet the expectations of our great communities of tropicalists and parasitologists, says Dr. Sinval.

During the congress this year, the 22nd edition of the Annual Meeting of Applied Research on Chagas disease and Leishmaniasis (ChagasLeish) will be held once again. The event is a tradition of the SBMT that seeks to respond to demands in the Unified Health System (SUS) from demands of control programs of Chagas Disease and Leishmaniasis. At the time, it will be possible to share experiences integrating multiple perspectives, from basic to applied research, with a strong interface along with professionals working in the health care network and in surveillance and control programs, aiming to possibly add new paths in the national and international agendas, in order to have the most effective confrontation of Chagas disease and leishmaniasis, seeking answers to old questions, yet so current. From this perspective emerges the theme of the 2019 ChagasLeish meeting: Integration between Research and Health Care searching for answers to strengthen the Unified Health System.

The 2019 Medtrop-Parasito will be held from July 27 to 31 at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), at the Pampulha campus, in the buildings of the Didactic Activities Centers 1 and 3 (CAD 1 and CAD 3), Rectory and Faculty of Economic Sciences (Face).
