Ex-presidentes, sócios fundadores da Sociedade Brasileira de Medicina Tropical (SBMT) e órgãos da área da Saúde, como OMS, OPAS, Fiocruz, Ministério da Saúde, CNPq, CAPES, entre outros, foram homenageados na noite de segunda-feira (24), segundo dia do Congresso (ICTMM), que ocorre no Royal Tulip Hotel, no Rio de Janeiro. Ao todo foram entregues 44 medalhas em reconhecimento aos trabalhos desenvolvidos na área de Medicina Tropical. Dez foram para instituições e as demais – 34 – àqueles que dedicaram à vida a esta causa.

Dr. José Coura, sócio fundador, ex-presidente da SBMT e presidente do ICTMM, foi o encarregado de chamar os agraciados. Acompanhado pelo atual presidente da entidade, Dr. Carlos Costa, em sua fala de abertura, Dr. Coura lembrou a época da criação da SBMT: “Promovemos assembléias e encontros para discutir propostas que culminaram na fundação da Sociedade em novembro de 1962.”

Em meio a aplausos, alguns homenageados aproveitaram a oportunidade para agradecer o reconhecimento. Como Dr. Zilton Andrade, sócio fundador da SBMT, que emocionado, acompanhado pela esposa, afirmou ser uma das homenagens mais importantes que já recebeu.

Todos os participantes do ICMTT foram contemplados, juntamente com o Kit do evento, com um livro contendo a história dos 50 anos da SBMT. Um DVD, com relatos dos 50 anos da Sociedade, bem como os desafios da nova Medicina Tropical, também está disponível para os participantes no estande da SBMT.

Ex-presidents, founders of the Brazilian Society of Tropical Medicine (SBMT) and health sector bodies, such as WHO, PAHO, Fiocruz, the Ministry of Health, CNPq, CAPES, among others, were honored on Monday night (24), the second day of the Congress (ICTMM), which took place at the Royal Tulip Hotel in Rio de Janeiro. In all, 44 medals were awarded in recognition of work done in the area of Tropical Medicine. Ten were for institutions and the remaining 34 were for those who have dedicated their life to this cause.

Dr. José Coura, a founding member, former president and chairman of the SBMT and president of the ICTMM, was in charge of announcing the recipients. Accompanied by the current president of the organization, Dr. Carlos Costa, in his opening speech, Dr. Coura recalled the time when SBMT was created: “We promoted assemblies and meetings to discuss proposals that culminated in the founding of the society in November 1962.”

Amid applause, some honorees took the opportunity to say thankyou for the recognition, such as Dr. Zilton Andrade, founding partner of SBMT. Clearly moved, and accompanied by his wife, he said that this was one of the most significant tributes that he had ever received.

All ICMTT participants were awarded, along with the Event Kit, with a book containing the story of 50 years of SBMT. A DVD, with reports of the 50 years of the Society as well as the challenges of the new Tropical Medicine, which was also available for participants at the SBMT booth.
