Uma das doenças mais temidas da humanidade, o Ebola – que afeta principalmente os países africanos – pode ter tratamentos que já se encontram no mercado. Em relatório publicado no jornal Science Translational Medicine, em junho, pesquisadores descobriram que os remédios Zooloft e Vascor podem auxiliar no combate à doença.

Em testes, o tratamento feito com o antidepressivo Zooloft possibilitou que sete em 10 camundongos infectados com o vírus Ebola sobrevivessem. Os resultados foram ainda melhores com o Vascor, habitualmente usado para controlar a pressão arterial em pacientes cardíacos: todos os 10 camundongos tratados com a droga sobreviveram.

A pesquisa, ainda preliminar, testou mais de 2.600 compostos – 90% deles aprovados pela Administração de Comidas e Remédios dos Estados Unidos (FDA, em inglês). Entre os medicamentos estavam tratamentos para câncer de mama, doenças cardíacas e depressão. Desses, 80 mostraram ter alguma eficácia contra o Ebola.

As drogas foram colocadas juntamente com células infectadas com a doença, para verificar se os medicamentos poderiam bloquear o vírus. Os mais eficazes, em seguida, foram testados em camundongos.

De acordo com um dos envolvidos com a pesquisa, o imunologista Gene Olinger, o próximo passo será testar os medicamentos em cobaias e macacos.

Testes mais aprofundados

Os responsáveis pelo estudo ressaltam ainda ser necessário testes mais aprofundados para confirmar a eficácia total dos medicamentos, já que os resultados obtidos não garantem aplicações bem-sucedidas. Além disso, as doses utilizadas nos animais testados são mais elevadas do que as recomendadas para o consumo humano.

No entanto, o relatório destaca os benefícios do uso de medicamentos já aprovados por órgãos de controle e disponíveis no mercado. Entre eles, o tempo menor para aprovar possíveis tratamentos e a redução de custos com pesquisas.

O Viagra é um dos exemplos positivos em relação ao uso de um mesmo remédio para diferentes finalidades. A droga foi criada como tratamento cardíaco antes da descoberta da sua eficácia contra a disfunção erétil.

One of the most feared diseases by humanity, the Ebola – which affects mainly African countries – could have treatments already available in the Market. In a report published in the Science Translational Medicine journal in June, researchers revealed that Zooloft and Vascor may be helpful against the disease.

In tests, the treatment with the antidepressant Zooloft allowed the survival of 7 out of 10 mice infected with the Ebola. The results were even better with Vascor, currently used by heart patients to control blood pressure: all 10 mice treated with the drug survived.

The research, still in preliminary phase, tested over 2600 compunds – 90% of them approved by the Food and Drug Administration – FDA. Among the medications were treatments against breast cancer, heart diseases and depression. From these, 80 proved some effectiveness against the Ebola.

The drugs were put together with Ebola infected cells, to analyze whether the medications could block the virus. The most efficient were then tested in mice.

According to the immunologist Gene Olinger, the next step will be to test the medications in guinea pigs and monkeys.

Deeper tests

Those in charge of the study stressed that deeper tests are still necessary in order to confirm the total effectiveness of the drugs, once the achieved results cannot guarantee successful applications. Besides this, the doses used in animals are much higher than what is recommended for human use.

However, the report highlights the benefits of the drugs having already been approved by control agencies and available in the market. Among them, shorter time to approve possible treatments and reduction of research costs.

The Viagra is one of the positive examples regarding the same drug for different means. The drug was created as a heart treatment before the discovery of its effectiveness against erectile dysfunction.
