Prizes awarded to young scientists will be handed during the opening ceremony of 2019 Medtrop-Parasito

The awards aim to encourage young scientists who have had outstanding performance in Tropical Medicine

The Young Researcher Award, created by the BSTM in 2014, aims to recognize the importance of the work of young researchers to science, as well as to stimulate the continuation of their work in the field of Tropical Medicine. This years edition will once again grant the amount of R$ 1.000,00 to the first place in each category (graduation, masters and doctorate), while the second and third places will be awarded with honorable mentions. The best works in each category will be presented on the first day of the event (pre-congress course day). The results of the awards will be announced during the opening ceremony of the 2019 Medtrop-Parasito, which will be held in Belo Horizonte (MG), between July 28 and 30.

To participate, the author must subscribe online until May 30th, on the congress website and choose one of the participation categories (undergraduate, masters or doctoral). To compete for the Young Researcher Award, the participant must fill out the form (https://www.medtrop-parasito2019.com.br/download/download?ID_DOWNLOAD=66), which must be signed by the advisor, and uploaded to the site, as well as also uploading a photo (of the main author) for promotion. Not submitting the complete documentation will exclude the paper from the award review process. To apply for the award, the candidate must be the first author of the submitted abstract, be present on the first day of the event, and make a presentation of the work.

Institut Mérieux – 2019 BSTM Young Investigator Award

The Mérieux Institute and the BSTM decided to establish a partnership to award a Young Researcher in 2017, aiming to encourage young professionals who had outstanding performance in Tropical Medicine. The award, worth € 10.000 was awarded during the 53rd edition, held in Cuiabá, and the 54th MedTrop, held in Recife, to Dr. Julio Croda and Dr. André Siqueira, respectively. This year, the prize, in the same amount, will be delivered during the opening ceremony of the 2019 Medtrop-Parasito.

To participate, candidates must be current members of the Brazilian Society of Tropical Medicine (SBMT); have attended a Brazilian hospital or a relevant full-time Brazilian research institution as an infectious disease clinician, clinical or molecular microbiologist or epidemiologist; have less than 10 years of professional experience in tropical diseases since completion of PhD; have involvement or have contributed significantly to the research of tropical diseases and / or the management of patients with national impact; accepted impact indicators include publications in prominent international journals and / or implementation of guidelines / protocols that have led to significant improvements in tropical diseases.

The application for the award must be submitted to the BSTM by June 20. The request, in English, should be sent to sbmt@localhost. It should include the applicants full name and contact information (email address and cell phone number), as well as a brief CV detailing his / her professional background and de ion, in one to two pages, of research and / or clinical projects that the young investigator has performed or that may be considered for the award. It is necessary to present supporting documents, such as the publication of the proposed work. It should also contain the one-to-two-page de ion of ongoing and future researches conducted by the candidate in the field of tropical diseases. Finally, a photo of the candidate and a letter of recommendation from the host institution where the candidate is working at the time of application (optional).

Members of a scientific committee appointed by the BSTM will evaluate the applications and classify two to three, which will be forwarded to the scientific council of the Institut Mérieux with their recommendations for the selection of the laureate. The Institut Mérieux may not award the prize if none of the proposals meets the minimum qualification. To receive the prize money, which does not exceed € 10.000 the BSTM must come to an agreement with the winner, and both will be responsible for the proper use of the research fund. The funds will be used only for research purposes over a period of 12 months.
